Exploration of the Inner Space
Life is a challenging journey, as you know. As I speak to you now, I know people who are challenged physically and they are facing death. Sometimes it is then that we reflect on what life is all about. While our body is strong and all is well, we tend to enjoy the world of pleasures, not looking into the future. It is like the bee that is stuck on the flower unaware of the danger ahead but is so caught in the nectar that it does not see or hear the foot of the elephant coming into the pond.
Sometimes we can be so caught up in this journey of life that we forget what the real purpose is. But when we become challenged by broken relationships, misfortune and health challenges, then we tend to wake up and say, ‘What is this all about and what is life all about? We should not wait for that to happen; we should inquire into the journey before that happens.
The journey of life is really a journey into the inner space. There is a vast space inside of us and a vast world inside of us, and life is a journey into that space. It is only when you are centred in that space within you that we call spiritual that you can deal with the fluctuations of life. Week after week, program after program, I am encouraging you to sit there; to go and sit there; to explore that inner world; to make time and find out who you really are and not get lost in the trinkets of the world. Behind the pleasure is pain. The formula is going beyond pleasure and pain.
It is just like the father telling the son, when you look at the seed, you will never think that there is a tree inside the seed. Look at the seed you will never tell there is a tree inside, but when you put the seed in the ground, a whole tree will emerge. Isn’t that a miracle that you can take a tiny seed and put it in the ground and a huge tree will come up? What is inside that tree that we don’t see that has this miracle?
What is inside the human beings that possess this phenomenal intelligence? What is inside the human beings that make them superhuman at times? - Being able to bend a spoon, being able to heal themselves, being able to levitate, being able to project thoughts across space. What is it in human beings that gives them this phenomenal power? What is it that makes a singer a powerful singer or a speaker a powerful speaker or a sports person, a powerful person? What is it that makes that person outstanding? It is because they touch a space inside that is very powerful.
How can you live without venturing? How can you be satisfied with the trinkets of the world? How can you be satisfied with broken relationships, a restless mind, or anxiety and fear in your being? How can you be satisfied with a little bit of pleasure and a huge amount of pain? How can you be satisfied with that? How come you don’t ask questions? We need to venture deeper into our being if we want to discover the secret to life.
In a beautiful story, the father told the son if you find out what is inside of you, you will understand the secret to all of life. If you know what is inside the tree, you will know the secret to the tree. If you know what is inside of you, you will understand the secret to the whole cosmos.
When you come together in spiritual fellowship each week, I try to guide you inside that you may begin to understand your inner self. When we are singing, we just don’t sing. In singing we are venturing deep inside ourselves to touch a space that we call ‘spiritual.’ When I talk to you, why I am talking? I am talking to guide you into an inner space. I am using language to communicate and to guide you to a space inside where you can feel your power. Why do we meet in gatherings? Gatherings carry greater power to inspire.
Coming together in spiritual fellowship is a journey into your inner being. It is not about singing different songs. It is about expressing yourself in song that you may go deeper and deeper into your inner being. It is not about listening to me, it is about listening to my words that they may lead you deeper into yourself and that they may inspire you to explore more of your world. It is not only to sit in the silence; it is to go deep in yourself in the silence that you may touch the heart of the entire group and by extension the Universe.
Who is God?
Though you are sitting in [a small meditation] hall… you can touch the entire world by going deep inside yourself where the universal energy exists. You can think of someone even if they are in the North Pole and you can touch them in an instant if you have a connection with them. You can think of someone in Holland, Canada, India or any country and you are touching their soul. That is the beauty and the marvellous thing of getting into your inner world, you can touch the Universe.
Who is God? Is God a man somewhere? Those were the old stories; you have grown up now. God is not a man; God is the power that powers your soul every day.
This week I was speaking a youth group and telling them how much power is required from a generating station to power up a country. And we only appreciate the generating stations when the power goes - when there is complete blackout: there is no radio, television, audio visual, and the place becomes dark. Those who live in Canada or the States know when the big blackout came in recent times what happened.
For the lights to come on, for the fans and air conditioning to work and all the huge processing plants to work, they need huge amounts of energy from natural gas and hydro electric power stations and nuclear plants; they need all these energies to work. The world is producing to meet all these energy needs of our world. When we look outside and see the billions of stars in the sky, we can just wonder who is powering up the Universe. Who is powering the sun? Where is the earth getting energy to move in a gravitational field around the sun? How is the earth moving? If we don’t eat, we don’t have energy. If we don’t get power from the power stations, we don’t get electricity. But these planets move every day.
Can you imagine where the power of the whole Universe is coming from? It seems to be coming from an inexhaustible field. The power just keeps coming and coming. We know that there is a field of infinite power in the Universe; it is called ‘the zero point field,’ a field of infinite energy existing everywhere. This is what the scientists are now theorising, that we have this infinite field of power. They are trying to run machines from that field. What is beautiful about this is that we human beings are already tapping into that field and we don’t know.
When we lift up a weight that is far beyond our body weight, where are we getting this power from? When we perform superhuman tasks that we cannot understand, when we defeat disease with tremendous mind power, where is this coming from? Is it from the food that we eat or is that power coming from another space?
There are people in the world who do not eat food, they are living simply by the breath and they are called ‘Breatharians.’ Where are they getting the energy to survive from? Then we realise that we human beings can tap into a field of infinite power. We can go beyond the physical, and that excites me. I have power to heal myself. I have power to push me, and I have power to perform miraculous things if only I can tap into that power.
When you sing, it is a way of tapping into that power so that you can sing forever. When you are going into the silence, you are going into a space where you can tap into where you can feel love that never ends. Satsang (Spiritual fellowship) is about tapping into this infinite field of energy.
The God that I know is that infinite field of energy that exists in our Universe and it possesses so much incredible intelligence that it shows the quality of intelligence that it takes to create the human body. We haven’t being able to duplicate the human body in an artificial way. We have created machines with artificial intelligence but they are no comparison. God exists within you and is part of your being. The seers of wisdom say that you are part of that field that we call ‘God.’ You are part of that infinite energy that is God; not your physical body but a part of your identity belongs to that field.
When you go deeper in meditation you will actually feel the God awareness inside of you and that you are divine - you will feel ‘I am divine; I am ageless; I am timeless; I am immortal; I am fulfilled in my being; I lack nothing; my love is infinite; and my peace is infinite.’ That is how you feel when you begin to touch the spiritual space.
When you think of human life, when you are caught in the physical world, you feel a sense of lacking, ‘I don’t have the perfect body, I am growing old’; in the mind you say, ‘I am not educated enough; I am not intelligent enough; I did not go to school enough; I am not creative enough; I am not brilliant enough.’ In the emotional world, ‘I am too moody; I am too depressing; I can’t excite people; I can’t inspire people.’ You go into all these tantrums of inferiority and powerlessness.
But, when you touch the spiritual part of you, you feel, ‘I am powerful; I am full of love; I am full of peace; I am not lacking anything and all is possible.’ This is what spiritual fellowship is, it is a journey into the space.
I am so happy, at the age of 21 years I was deep into this journey and at 24 years I reached a point of fulfilment. At the age of 24 years I was touching a space inside of me that fulfils me and I felt no more lacking.
How I wish that you can feel that. How I wish that you can get a feeling of that immense power inside of you. How I wish you can get that infinite field of power that we call ‘God’ and not to look outside but to tap into that field inside. We call that ‘Self-realization.’ It is a possibility for every human being. It is not for angels, not for elitists, not for special people but for all of us.
When I began to have spiritual experiences I began to think, ‘I am just a simple person, I was born in an unknown country, and I am a son of a farmer. What can I know, do I deserve this kind of experience that I am having?’ It really doesn’t matter who you are or where you are, if you make yourself deserving, the truth of life will be yours. We are all deserving. Whether you are the son or daughter of royalty, or just a commoner in human terms, we are all the same in the sight of the Creator of Life.
